The honest guide to bottled water

Most bottled water guides are rankings written to sell you something. This one starts with the conclusion the evidence actually supports, even though it's bad for a site about bottled water to say it:

For everyday home drinking, filtered tap water beats every bottled water on cost, environmental footprint, and verifiability. Tap water in the US is publicly tested, publicly reported, and costs about a penny a gallon. Bottled water runs roughly 300 to 3,000 times more, is self-tested by the companies that sell it, and — as you'll see below — is not measurably safer.

That said, bottled water has real uses: travel, emergencies, a local contamination problem, a tap you genuinely can't stand, or a mineral profile you actually want. If you're going to buy it, buy it with your eyes open. Here's what the independent evidence says.

The first thing to know: most brands won't tell you what's in the bottle

Before any safety question, there's a disclosure problem. When we compiled mineral data for more than fifty products, a clear split emerged:

  • European natural mineral waters (Evian, Gerolsteiner, San Pellegrino, Perrier, Volvic and peers) publish full laboratory analyses — because EU law prohibits adding minerals and requires bottling at the source, transparency is built into the category.
  • Most American purified and "electrolyte" waters disclose almost nothing. Dasani, Nestlé Pure Life, BodyArmor SportWater and most store brands list ingredient names — "minerals added for taste" — without a single concentration. You cannot compare what you cannot see.

Non-disclosure isn't proof of a problem. But it's a choice, and it's why every water in our database carries a disclosure grade. All else equal, buy from brands that show their numbers.

What independent testing has actually found

Microplastics are everywhere — and the health meaning is unsettled. A landmark 2018 multi-country study found microplastic particles in the overwhelming majority of bottled waters tested across major global brands, and a widely covered 2024 study using new laser microscopy estimated far higher counts once nanoplastics were included. Two honest caveats: the 2024 figures have been formally challenged by other scientists over quality-control methods, and no established human health effect from these exposures has been demonstrated yet. What you can fairly conclude: bottled water is not a way to avoid plastic particles — if anything, the bottle itself is a source — and this cuts against the "purity premium" story more than it indicts any single brand.

PFAS shows up most in sparkling waters. A 2020 Consumer Reports investigation found that most still waters tested very low for PFAS ("forever chemicals"), while a cluster of carbonated waters exceeded the strictest advocacy thresholds — Topo Chico highest among them, though it substantially reduced its levels after the findings. All were below any enforceable limit, and the FDA's most recent retail survey found no bottled waters exceeding EPA's new tap-water PFAS limits. Reasonable takeaway: if PFAS is your specific concern, favor still purified waters, and know that this landscape is actively changing as federal limits phase in.

Arsenic is the clearest brand-specific red flag. Independent testing in 2019 found most brands at very low arsenic levels — but a small number near or above the 10 parts-per-billion federal limit. Peñafiel was voluntarily withdrawn after testing above it. Starkey, the Whole Foods brand, repeatedly tested just under the limit and had earlier recalls above it. Arsenic at these levels is legal-adjacent, not acutely dangerous — but when dozens of alternatives test at a tenth of those values, there's no reason to choose the outlier.

The worst case wasn't contamination — it was chemistry. The most serious bottled water event in recent memory was Real Water, an alkaline brand recalled in 2021 after being linked to acute liver failure cases, including hospitalized young children and one death, with juries later returning multibillion-dollar verdicts. The lesson isn't that bottled water is dangerous — it's that "alkaline" and "premium" labels carry zero safety information, and that the category's self-policing failed exactly when it mattered.

And "spring water" is sometimes a legal argument, not a geological fact. Poland Spring has spent years in federal litigation over whether its water legally qualifies as spring water at all — a question a judge ruled in late 2024 remains genuinely open. However it resolves, the case is a useful reminder: the romance on the label is marketing until proven otherwise.

The taste test humbling

Blind tastings are brutal to the premium-water story. Across repeated tests — news programs, universities, even a famous restaurant prank serving garden-hose water from fancy bottles — most people cannot reliably distinguish premium bottled water from good tap, and tap frequently ties or wins. The prestigious international tasting competitions, meanwhile, are consistently won by small regional springs you've never seen in a store, not the brands with the marketing budgets.

Taste differences that are real mostly track minerals: higher-TDS waters read as crisp or "minerally," very pure waters read as flat, and temperature matters more than brand. If you love a particular water's taste, that's legitimate — just know you're paying for a mineral profile, not purity.

When minerals actually matter

For most people, the mineral differences between bottled waters are nutritionally minor — single-digit percentages of daily needs. Two exceptions are worth knowing:

  • High-mineral waters are a real supplement. A liter of Gerolsteiner delivers roughly a quarter of daily calcium and magnesium recommendations — a genuine contribution, especially for people whose diets run short on magnesium.
  • High-sodium waters are a real warning. A liter of Vichy Catalan carries over a gram of sodium — around half a typical daily budget. If you're on a sodium-restricted diet, mineral water labels deserve the same attention as food labels. When in doubt, ask your physician.

The verdicts

Best default for home: Filtered tap water through a certified filter. Cheapest, lowest footprint, and the only option whose quality you can independently verify through your utility's public reports — or our lookup tool.

Best bottled value: Inexpensive purified waters — including store brands like Kirkland — which share the same reverse-osmosis process and near-identical chemistry with purified waters costing three times as much. The premium purified brands are mostly paying for the bottle.

Best if you want minerals: A fully disclosed natural mineral water matched to your goal — Gerolsteiner for calcium and magnesium, mid-mineral spring waters like Evian for balance. (Our quiz will match you to a profile.)

Approach with caveats: Sparkling waters if PFAS is your personal concern; any brand with an arsenic history (Starkey most prominently) when equivalent alternatives test far lower; and any water sold primarily on an "alkaline" health promise, a claim the evidence doesn't support.

The packaging honest take: Every single-use format loses to a refillable bottle. Among single-use options, lightweight plastic actually tends to score best in lifecycle analyses — and the boxed and canned "eco" alternatives rest heavily on industry-funded claims. Choose the format you'll actually recycle, and be skeptical of packaging virtue as a selling point.
